Nigeria Pushes for Regional Tax Cooperation to Boost Revenue Mobilisation

Nigeria is pushing for closer tax administration coordination across West Africa to curb revenue leakages and prevent cross-border profit shifting. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele has called on the West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) to implement benchmarking tools and performance scorecards to hold member states accountable for ECOWAS tax directives. This move aims to expand Nigeria’s domestic revenue base by creating a harmonized regional environment, reducing the country’s reliance on debt to fund public infrastructure and services. While domestic tax reforms have been largely legislated, the government views regional cooperation as essential to capturing revenue from increasingly mobile digital and multinational business operations.
