FEWS NET Projects 17 Million Nigerians Will Face Acute Hunger by 2027

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) projects that between 16 million and 16.99 million Nigerians will require urgent food assistance by January 2027. While this represents a decline from the estimated 20 million to 20.99 million people needing support in July 2026, the figure remains above the country’s five-year average. FEWS NET identifies persistent conflict in northern Nigeria and elevated staple food prices as the primary drivers of this ongoing food insecurity. Nigeria is expected to rank fourth globally in the number of people requiring humanitarian aid by early 2027.
