Rising shipping surcharges on containers from the Indian subcontinent are set to increase the cost of importing motorcycles into Nigeria. Leading carriers, including MSC and Maersk, have introduced peak season and contingency surcharges, adding significant costs to shipments of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) parts. Since India accounts for 98% of Nigeria’s motorcycle imports, industry experts warn that these costs will inevitably be passed down the value chain, impacting final consumers, logistics firms, and delivery riders by September. Many companies, such as food delivery startup Swoop, are currently absorbing these costs to protect demand, but warn that sustained increases will eventually force a rise in service fees.
