FG Mandates Strict Data Protection Compliance for MDAs, Warns Heads of Liability

The Federal Government has mandated all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to fully comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023. Issued via a circular from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the directive requires MDAs to appoint Data Protection Officers, register them with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), and conduct mandatory compliance audits. Crucially, the government has placed personal liability on Permanent Secretaries, Accounting Officers, and Chief Executive Officers for any failure to adhere to these data privacy regulations. This move aims to secure national data and improve public trust as the government ramps up its digital governance framework.
