Former insurance commissioner Mohammed Kari has formally cautioned the Federal Government against interfering in the National Insurance Commission’s (NAICOM) enforcement of industry recapitalization requirements. In an open letter to the Minister of Finance, Kari argued that political intervention to shield NICON Insurance and Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation from regulatory demands undermines the integrity of the market. He warned that granting these firms exemptions would create an uneven playing field, damage investor confidence, and weaken the credibility of the broader insurance reforms intended to build a more resilient financial sector.
