Nearly Half of Nigerian Households Report Job or Business Losses in New Report

A new report from SBM Intelligence reveals that 45.3% of Nigerian households experienced job losses or business closures over the past year. The study, which surveyed 1,180 respondents across all six geopolitical zones, highlights severe regional disparities in labour market pressures. The Southeast recorded the highest impact at 66.5%, while the Northwest recorded the lowest at 21.5%. Nearly 80% of respondents expressed a willingness to relocate for better employment opportunities, underscoring deep-seated economic instability. The findings further emphasize a mismatch between workforce aspirations—particularly in digital skills—and the sectors currently absorbing labour. Experts suggest that a localized, regional approach to economic policy is essential to addressing these structural challenges.
