SEC Orders Capital Market Firms to Sever Ties with North Korea and Iran

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has mandated all capital market operators to immediately terminate correspondent banking relationships and restrict dealings with North Korea and Iran. This directive, aligning with Financial Action Task Force standards, aims to combat money laundering and terrorism financing. Firms must also implement enhanced due diligence for Myanmar and twenty other jurisdictions under increased international monitoring. Non-compliance with these measures, effective immediately, could result in fines, license suspension, or registration revocation under the Investments and Securities Act 2025. Operators are required to report suspicious transactions to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.
