President Tinubu Signs Law Establishing Ports Economic Regulator

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency Act into law, formally establishing the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA). This new legislation replaces the interim regulatory framework that the Nigerian Shippers’ Council had managed since 2014, providing a permanent statutory basis for overseeing port tariffs, competition, and commercial dispute resolution. The move aims to streamline port operations and enhance predictability for investors, though stakeholders remain focused on how the agency will delineate its authority from existing bodies like the Nigerian Ports Authority and NIMASA.
