Group Demands Transparency on Five Billion Dollar Abu Dhabi Financing Deal

The Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics has criticized the Federal Government over a lack of transparency regarding the 5 billion dollar Total Return Swap facility secured from First Abu Dhabi Bank. In a review of the government’s economic reform scorecard, the group argued that the facility carries significant public interest implications—including potential margin-call risks—that warrant greater disclosure, despite its commercial structure. The think tank also challenged the government’s fiscal reporting, noting that over half of reported incremental resources came from new borrowing rather than revenue. Furthermore, the report highlighted that despite cooling inflation, many Nigerians continue to struggle with high food prices and rising poverty levels. The group recommended that the government publish a redacted term sheet for the financing arrangement and provide more frequent, transparent macroeconomic reporting.
