Local Machinery Innovation Reshapes Nigeria’s Food Processing Sector

Nigeria’s food processing industry is increasingly adopting locally fabricated machinery to reduce reliance on expensive imports and boost productivity. Innovations from indigenous engineers and research institutes include rice milling machines, cassava processing equipment, and grain grinders. These locally made units are significantly cheaper, easier to maintain, and help reduce post-harvest losses while empowering cottage industries. However, standardization and food-grade safety remain areas for improvement, with experts noting that the full operationalization of Ajaokuta Steel Company could further catalyze the mass production of precision components for the sector.
