Tanzania has officially commissioned the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, a 2,115-megawatt facility that more than doubles the nation’s electricity generation capacity to 4,646 MW. Built at a cost of $2.84 billion on the Rufiji River, the project eliminates domestic power shortages and creates a surplus of 2,375 MW. President Samia Suluhu Hassan highlighted the plant’s role in driving industrial growth, with government officials already in talks to export excess power to regional neighbors including Kenya and Zambia.
