Japan to Implement Steep Increase in Residency Fees from October 2026

The Japanese government will implement a massive increase in residency-related application fees starting in October 2026. Under the new ordinance, costs for extending or changing residency status will rise significantly, with some fees increasing by over 1,000 percent. Permanent residency applications will see the sharpest hike, jumping twenty-fold from 10,000 to 200,000 yen. The government has introduced limited humanitarian exemptions to mitigate the impact on vulnerable applicants. These measures follow a recent hike in tourist visa fees and are intended to cover rising administrative costs and support immigration management infrastructure.
