Canada Increases International Student Proof-of-Funds Requirement

Canada has increased its proof-of-funds requirement for international student permit applicants to 23,448 Canadian dollars, effective September 1, 2026. This adjustment, intended to reflect the rising cost of living, represents a 553-dollar increase from the previous baseline. Prospective students must demonstrate these funds in addition to first-year tuition and travel costs, which often brings the total financial requirement exceeding 40,000 dollars. The new thresholds also scale proportionally for applicants traveling with family members. While the federal government is updating its systems, many Canadian universities have already begun implementing the new guidelines for international admissions.
