Global ride-hailing leader Uber has officially ceased operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective September 2, 2026. The exit ends the company’s 12-year presence in the Nigerian market, which began in Lagos in 2014. Uber stated the decision followed a strategic review of its business priorities across Africa and is unrelated to recent regulatory disputes with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria. While core services have ended, customer support will remain available until September 23 to resolve final account-related matters. The withdrawal highlights the severe economic challenges facing Nigeria’s ride-hailing sector, where high fuel and maintenance costs have squeezed margins, making it difficult for platforms to balance sustainable pricing for passengers with fair earnings for drivers. The market is now left to be served by remaining operators such as Bolt and inDrive.
