Youthful Pension Base Offers Strategic Shift Toward Productive Investment Assets

Nigeria’s pension sector is witnessing a demographic shift, with over 75 percent of new Retirement Savings Accounts opened in Q1 2026 belonging to individuals under 40. Data from the National Pension Commission indicates that this youthful contributor base offers a multi-decade investment horizon, positioning pension funds as a potential engine for patient capital. Currently, nearly 60 percent of pension assets are tied to federal government securities. Industry leaders, including PenCom Director-General Omolola Oloworaran and PenOp CEO Anthonia Ifeanyi-Okoro, argue that this long-term profile justifies a strategic shift toward infrastructure, real estate, and other productive assets to boost economic growth and improve risk-adjusted returns. However, experts emphasize that unlocking this potential requires enhanced regulatory clarity and the development of specialized market instruments to channel funds effectively into the real economy.
