The Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) reports that religious remittances from across Africa to Nigerian churches are becoming a significant driver of cross-border payment volumes. CEO Mike Ogbalu noted that these transactions are contributing to a shift away from U.S. dollar dependence, alongside growing trade flows between Nigeria and markets like Rwanda, Kenya, and Ghana. Additionally, PAPSS is currently exploring the integration of stablecoins and digital assets into its payment ecosystem to further streamline intra-African trade. Separately, crypto firm SpaceTrade is pivoting its business model to focus on everyday utility payments, such as airtime and electricity bills, to drive broader consumer adoption of digital assets.
