Nigeria to Rejoin FTSE Frontier Market Index on September 21

FTSE Russell will officially reclassify Nigeria from Unclassified to Frontier Market status effective September 21, 2026. This return to the global index family follows improvements in foreign exchange liquidity, capital repatriation, and the successful implementation of the T+1 settlement cycle. While the move signals restored confidence in the Nigerian market’s accessibility, analysts caution that it does not guarantee immediate, broad-based capital inflows. Institutional investors are expected to prioritize highly liquid, large-cap stocks across telecommunications, banking, cement, and energy sectors. The reclassification aligns with a broader shift in market dynamics as the NGX prepares for the anticipated Dangote Refinery IPO in October. Investors are advised to focus on firms with strong earnings and significant free float rather than reacting to the headline news alone.
