Nigeria has increased its health insurance coverage from under 5 percent to 20 percent over the past three years, according to President Bola Tinubu. Addressing the BusinessDay Health Conference in Abuja, the President noted that patronage at primary healthcare facilities surged from 10 million visits in early 2024 to 45 million by mid-2025. Despite these gains, sector experts—including the CEO of the African Medical Centre of Excellence, Brian Deaver—warned that achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2030 requires more than funding. Stakeholders emphasized that success depends on fixing weak referral systems, ensuring operational transparency, and integrating healthcare infrastructure to build public trust and deliver measurable outcomes.
