The Nigerian government has disbursed N339 billion through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) since its inception, as part of broader efforts to strengthen primary healthcare and achieve universal coverage. Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, highlighted that national health insurance coverage has risen to 20 percent. However, experts at the recent BusinessDay Health Conference warned that increased funding alone is insufficient. Stakeholders emphasized that accountability, functional infrastructure, and fixing weak referral systems are essential to translate investments into tangible health outcomes for Nigerians. Currently, out-of-pocket payments still account for over 70 percent of healthcare expenditure.
