Nigeria’s pension fund assets reached N31.8 trillion by August 2026, marking a 51% increase over two years. The National Pension Commission (PenCom) aims to leverage this growth by committing $250 million to infrastructure development over the next decade. Meanwhile, industry stakeholders are calling for more innovative financial products to effectively channel these long-term assets into productive sectors like infrastructure and SME development, as market participants argue that the challenge lies in creating bankable projects rather than a lack of capital. PenCom also announced new initiatives to improve retiree welfare, including a minimum pension guarantee and a health insurance pilot for low-income retirees.
