U.S. Formalises Permanent Visa Bond Requirement for Nigeria

The United States has formalised its Visa Bond Program, making it a permanent requirement for travellers from Nigeria and several other countries. Starting Monday, August 3, 2026, eligible B-1/B-2 visa applicants may be required to post bonds ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 as a condition for visa issuance. The programme, which succeeds a one-year pilot, aims to ensure compliance with visa terms and prevent overstays. Consular officers determine the bond amount based on individual risk assessments. Bonds will be refunded if the traveller departs the U.S. within the authorised timeframe, but will be forfeited for visa violations or overstays. This policy follows a period of heightened immigration screening for countries identified as having high visa overstay rates or security concerns.
