A new report from SBM Intelligence, titled Six Zones, One Crisis, highlights that Nigeria’s employment market is highly regionalized, with distinct labor challenges across the country’s six geopolitical zones rather than a single national crisis. The study, based on a survey of 1,180 respondents, identifies technology, agriculture, and healthcare as the most sought-after sectors nationally, though specific priorities shift based on regional economic strengths and deficits. Key barriers to employment also vary, ranging from poor infrastructure and limited capital access in the Southwest to skills deficits in the North and security and wage concerns in the Southeast and South-South. The report argues that centralized, one-size-fits-all policy interventions are ineffective and advocates for region-specific economic strategies, such as developing local industrial clusters, addressing regional infrastructure bottlenecks, and aligning vocational training with specific local market demands.
