Moniepoint is advocating for a shift in Nigerian lending practices, urging financial institutions to prioritize transaction-based cash flow data over traditional collateral requirements. This proposal follows the release of the 2026 EFInA Access to Financial Services in Nigeria survey, which highlights a rise in formal credit usage to 10%, up from 6% in 2023. However, the survey also reveals that much of this credit is driven by consumption and coping needs rather than productive investment, with significant portions of borrowers facing repayment stress. Moniepoint suggests that leveraging transaction data can better identify creditworthy small businesses that lack physical assets, supporting national financial inclusion goals.
