The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has awarded 37 oil and gas blocks to 31 companies following a competitive licensing round. While 143 firms submitted 200 bids for 50 available assets, 13 blocks remained unclaimed and will undergo further technical de-risking before being re-offered.

Winners must finalize signature bonuses and contract execution within 90 days to avoid forfeiting their assets. The NUPRC aims for these blocks to add 500 million barrels to national reserves and contribute 300,000 barrels per day to production within three years, supporting the government’s target of 3 million barrels per day by 2030. The process, conducted under the Petroleum Industry Act, emphasizes a "drill or drop" policy to prevent speculative holding of acreage.

Nigeria’s reliance on imported petrol has surged, reversing progress toward energy independence. Data from the NMDPRA shows daily petrol imports jumped from 5.9 million litres in May to 18.1 million litres in June—a 207% increase.

Simultaneously, domestic daily supply, primarily from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, fell by 21.7% to 32.5 million litres in June. While the Dangote refinery reported an average production of 39.1 million litres per day, a portion of this output was diverted to exports and inventory build-up. This supply volatility, coupled with a renewed legal battle between the Dangote refinery and regulators over import licensing, has created uncertainty among fuel marketers and placed renewed pressure on Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

Dr. Dakuku Peterside highlights the essential intersection of performance and long-term sustainability for leaders in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. He argues that while short-term financial targets are critical, true institutional success requires disciplined operational excellence, investment in human capital, and the preservation of trust among stakeholders. Ultimately, leadership in the industry must be viewed as stewardship, where today’s strategic decisions are designed to secure future competitiveness and institutional resilience rather than just immediate gains.

Businesses often fail to distinguish between potential clients with a need for services and those willing to pay for them. To achieve sustainable growth, professionals must implement filters—such as consultation fees or mandatory deposits—to ensure time is reserved for serious clients rather than non-paying browsers. By setting clear boundaries, publishing pricing, and requiring formal engagement, businesses can improve efficiency, protect their resources, and focus on delivering value to clients who contribute to long-term profitability.

The newly released Nigeria Capacity Index 2026 has assigned the country a score of 54.2, a diagnostic metric designed to measure institutional capability rather than economic performance. Unlike traditional indicators like GDP or inflation, this index evaluates how effectively Nigeria’s institutional machinery converts policy vision into measurable outcomes.

The report identifies coordination, rather than a lack of policy ambition or technical expertise, as the primary bottleneck preventing Nigeria from translating its human and natural potential into superior national results. By pinpointing structural constraints, the index provides a framework for targeted institutional reform, emphasizing that state capacity is not fixed but can be systematically improved to drive sustainable development and investor confidence.

Shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk has announced the resumption of its WAF6 service through the Red Sea, significantly shortening transit times between the Middle East and West Africa. Previously, vessels were forced to divert around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid security threats from Houthi militants, leading to weeks of delays. This return to the Suez corridor, which handles a portion of Nigeria’s $9 billion annual trade with the Middle East, is expected to improve supply chain efficiency for essential imports like refined petroleum products and industrial machinery. While Maersk will continue monitoring the security situation, the move offers a shorter alternative for Nigerian shippers compared to the extended South African route.

Nigeria is on track to reach its target of producing 3 million barrels of oil per day by 2030, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). This growth is driven by government reforms, including faster permitting and new tax incentives aimed at attracting investment. Production has already seen a boost, reaching an average of 1.56 million barrels per day in June, the highest level since April 2020. However, industry analysts note that sustainable long-term growth will require significant new exploration and development rather than just reactivating mature fields.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has confirmed it opened two foreign-currency domiciliary accounts for the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) following a directive from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation. However, the CBN stated that the accounts remained inactive with zero balances, as they lacked the necessary documentation and authorized signatories for activation.

This testimony, provided by the Director of Banking Services, Hamisu Ibrahim, contradicts earlier claims by the Accountant-General that no such accounts existed. Simultaneously, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, denied allocating office space to the council, clarifying that the address in question falls under the purview of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee, investigating the legitimacy of the agency, has summoned top government officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police, to appear for further questioning.

The Federal Government has dismissed claims that the Tinubu administration added N80 trillion to Nigeria’s debt stock, labeling the figures as misleading. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele explained to the Senate Committee on Finance that the apparent surge is primarily due to accounting adjustments rather than new borrowing. Specifically, the revaluation of foreign currency obligations following naira depreciation added over N40 trillion to the debt figures, while the securitization of N33 trillion in Ways and Means advances—obligations inherited from the previous administration—accounted for another major portion. The Minister emphasized that current domestic borrowing is largely focused on refinancing maturing debts, maintaining that the administration remains committed to debt sustainability. Meanwhile, the Senate Committee expressed concerns over the slow implementation of the 2026 capital budget, with officials promising to improve project execution through performance-based budgeting.

Crude oil prices cooled slightly on Tuesday, trading around $88 per barrel, as reports emerged of potential ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran. This follows a sharp rally that pushed prices toward the $90 mark earlier in the week, driven by intensifying geopolitical tensions and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

While market participants are cautiously optimistic about a diplomatic de-escalation, the region remains volatile. Continued military activity and concerns over the security of critical oil transit routes have kept investors on edge. For Nigeria, sustained oil prices well above the government’s budget benchmark of $64.85 per barrel remain a positive for fiscal revenue and foreign exchange inflows, though experts warn of potential inflationary risks from higher global fuel costs.

He highlighted that progress depends on addressing the entire value chain, specifically through cost-effective construction techniques, policy reforms, and improved financing options. Emodi noted that despite developer willingness, high costs and regulatory hurdles continue to limit large-scale delivery of homes that align with the purchasing power of the population.

The command has reiterated the Inspector-General of Police’s directive banning unauthorized mobile phone searches by patrol officers and urged the public to report misconduct.
