Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Olayemi Cardoso has reaffirmed that the regulator will maintain stringent supervision of the banking sector, notwithstanding the successful completion of the recent bank recapitalisation exercise.

Speaking at the BusinessDay 14th Annual CEO Forum, Cardoso emphasised that continuous oversight is essential to ensure long-term stability and resilience within the financial system. The recapitalisation programme, which raised between N4 trillion and N5 trillion, was designed to fortify banks against economic shocks and support their expansion across Africa and international markets.

Cardoso noted that while banks have initially prioritised investment in government securities, he expects lending to the real sector to expand as inflation and interest rates moderate. He cautioned banks against indiscriminate lending, urging them to prioritize sophisticated risk management practices to protect depositors’ funds. The CBN remains committed to working with lenders to enhance their capacity for assessing complex lending opportunities. The recapitalisation exercise was concluded in March 2026, with 33 banks successfully meeting the new capital requirements.

The 2026 Nigeria Environmental Summit (NESt) concluded in Abuja on June 18, marking a strategic pivot in the nation’s climate approach. Rather than viewing climate action solely as an environmental obligation, stakeholders have repositioned it as a core driver for economic growth, job creation, and long-term competitiveness.

A key outcome of the summit is the collective commitment to unlock over $5 billion in green investment pipelines. This is expected to be achieved through enhanced governance, innovative financing models—such as green bonds and carbon markets—and stronger public-private partnerships. Participants emphasized the urgent need to transition to climate-resilient infrastructure to mitigate the economic losses caused by frequent environmental disasters like flooding.

The construction sector featured prominently in discussions, with industry leaders, including representatives from HBM Nigeria plc (formerly Lafarge Africa plc), advocating for circular economy principles. This includes recycling construction materials and adopting resource-efficient building standards to reduce environmental degradation and lower costs. The summit underscored that for Nigeria to remain globally competitive, it must align its development strategies with sustainable finance and ESG standards to attract international investment.

Nigeria’s pension assets under management grew by 51 percent over the last two years, rising from N20.79 trillion in July 2024 to N31.48 trillion. This record growth, documented by the National Pension Commission (PenCom), reflects a gain of N10.6 trillion in assets and an increase in registered contributors to 11.32 million.

PenCom Director General Omolola Oloworaran credited the surge to aggressive reforms under the current administration, including modernized payout frameworks, improved benefit administration, and stronger enforcement of contribution compliance. Key highlights include the settlement of long-standing pension obligations through a N758 billion federal bond, the clearance of accrued pension rights arrears, and the implementation of a 48-hour approval mandate for retirement benefit applications. Moving forward, the Commission plans to expand coverage to the informal sector and mobilize pension capital into key economic sectors such as infrastructure and agriculture.

The Federal Government has launched the Nigeria Cashew Industry Roadmap to tackle the loss of economic value caused by exporting over 85 percent of the country’s annual cashew production in raw form. The initiative aims to increase domestic processing capacity, boost non-oil export earnings, and create jobs. Government officials noted that while Nigeria produces up to 350,000 metric tonnes of raw cashew nuts annually, inadequate local processing has stifled growth. The roadmap seeks to address challenges such as poor infrastructure, limited financing, and ageing plantations. A new Nigerian Cashew Project Office will be established to coordinate efforts with development partners and industry stakeholders to improve competitiveness and support the national goal of a one trillion dollar economy.

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Olayemi Cardoso has indicated that the bank remains cautious regarding interest rate cuts, citing persistent external shocks such as geopolitical tensions. While inflation had shown signs of cooling previously, the CBN is prioritizing price stability over immediate monetary easing. Speaking at a forum ahead of the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for July 20-21, 2026, Cardoso emphasized that policy decisions will remain data-driven rather than swayed by market sentiment. The regulator continues to navigate a delicate balance between supporting economic growth and curbing inflationary pressures, signaling that interest rates may remain elevated for longer than investors anticipated.

Global oil prices are set for their largest weekly gain since April, with Brent crude rising to $85.06 per barrel and WTI climbing to $79.88. This surge is driven by heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East following renewed US military strikes on Iranian targets and subsequent disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalating conflict has slowed tanker traffic and increased security risks, leading to concerns over global energy supply. For Nigeria, while crude prices significantly above the $64.85 budget benchmark provide a boost to government revenues and foreign exchange earnings, the potential for prolonged supply chain disruptions threatens to fuel global inflationary pressures. Markets remain on high alert for further developments in the region.

The United Nations has urged African governments to adopt targeted, risk-based approaches when implementing anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations to avoid stifling civil society organisations (CSOs).

Speaking at the 3rd Africa High-Level Civil Society Conference in Abuja, UN Special Rapporteur Ben Saul emphasised that most non-profits do not pose terrorist financing risks. He warned against blanket regulations, excessive reporting requirements, and the denial of banking services, which can hinder essential humanitarian work.

Nigerian officials highlighted that Nigeria’s national risk assessment model successfully transitioned from broad, indiscriminate regulation to an evidence-based approach that focuses only on vulnerable entities. The conference underscored that fostering trust and collaboration between regulators and civil society is crucial to curbing the continent’s estimated $88 billion annual illicit financial flows without compromising civic freedoms.

Access Holdings has emerged as the leader in Tier 1 capital growth among African lenders, according to The Banker’s 2026 Top 1000 World Banks report. The Nigerian banking group recorded a 60.9 percent increase in Tier 1 capital, reaching $2.46 billion, driven by its aggressive pan-African acquisition strategy, including the purchase of Standard Chartered subsidiaries and the National Bank of Kenya.

Four Nigerian lenders—Access Holdings, GTCO, UBA, and Zenith Bank—featured among the top 10 fastest-growing African banks in the rankings. This growth reflects the ongoing industry recapitalisation drive and successful diversification into regional markets, which helps mitigate risks associated with the Nigerian macroeconomic environment. While the rapid expansion strategy has temporarily pressured brand value, analysts note that it is successfully shifting the group’s profit base away from an over-reliance on the domestic economy.

Food Inflation Surpasses Monetary Policy Control, Say Analysts

Analysts at Zrosk Equity Research have cautioned that rising food prices have become the primary driver of Nigeria’s inflation, moving beyond the influence of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) monetary policies.

While headline inflation for June showed a marginal slowdown to 15.91%, the underlying data reveals that food inflation accelerated significantly, with farm produce prices jumping 4.42% month-on-month. Farm produce now accounts for approximately 71% of the monthly headline inflation, highlighting a supply-side shock that traditional interest rate adjustments cannot effectively address.

The research indicates that because food makes up a substantial portion of the Consumer Price Index, current pressures will likely keep inflation elevated regardless of energy prices or exchange rate stability. Consequently, analysts suggest that tackling these price hikes requires structural improvements in agricultural production and supply chains rather than further monetary tightening. Reflecting these persistent inflationary challenges, institutions like Standard Chartered have revised their interest rate outlooks, anticipating less aggressive monetary easing in the coming period.

The Nigerian equities market closed marginally lower on July 16, 2026, as a sharp decline in heavyweight industrial stocks offset gains in the banking sector. The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) fell 0.09% to 242,145.61 points, resulting in a N32.16 billion loss in market capitalisation, which settled at N156.21 trillion.

BUA Cement was the primary drag on the index, plummeting 9.99% and pulling the Industrial Goods sector down by 2.85%. Despite this, market breadth remained positive with 27 gainers against 23 losers, bolstered by a strong rally in banking stocks. First HoldCo reached a record high, climbing 9.96% to N87.25, while UBA and JAIZBANK also posted significant gains. SEPLAT dominated trading activity, accounting for 37.82% of the total value traded. The divergent performance suggests that while investor sentiment remains largely constructive, profit-taking in blue-chip industrial names is driving short-term volatility ahead of the half-year earnings season.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is set to modernize cargo operations at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, with the deployment of non-intrusive scanning technology. The project, which involves the installation of CX180 180DH pallet scanners at the SAHCO and NAHCO warehouses, is currently awaiting final regulatory approval.

The initiative aims to replace manual physical inspections with automated scanning, significantly reducing cargo processing times and enhancing border security. Customs officers have completed specialized training in image analysis, and infrastructure upgrades—including the installation of CCTV and the deployment of traffic management officers—are planned to ensure seamless operations once the system goes live. This move is part of the NCS’s broader strategy to digitize trade processes and improve logistics efficiency at Nigeria’s major cargo hubs.

Nigeria emerged as the leading destination for private capital in Africa during the second quarter of 2026, accounting for 63 transactions and $8 billion of the region’s $8.9 billion in disclosed deal value. According to the Stears Q2 2026 Private Capital in Africa Activity Report, the continent saw 221 transactions, a 19% increase from Q1, though aggregate disclosed deal value fell to $10.8 billion as mega-deals cooled. While transaction volume rose, the market faced a "middle-market squeeze," with deals between $2.5 million and $75 million losing share to smaller tickets and mega-deals. Financial services remained the dominant sector, though exit activity hit its lowest point since 2022, signaling restricted liquidity for investors.
